The Reclay Forum for the Future 2015
23.-24. September 2015
The Reclay Forum for the Future took place for the second time on 23rd and 24th September in Berlin. The theme of this year’s event was “opportunities for a resource-efficient economy: from recycling legislation to expanded product responsibility worldwide”. More than 120 participants from the financial, political, association and media sector as well as some of our competitors accepted our invitation and gained valuable insights into the market conditions and inspiring ideas for the circular economy.
Dr Melinda Crane, Chief Foreign Correspondent at Deutsche Welle TV, led the comprehensive programme. The first part of the forum focused on developments in the waste management policy in Germany: Dr Helge Wendenburg, Head of Department in the Federal Ministry for the Environment responsible for waste management, reported on the progress of the work done on the recycling legislaton und emphasised that the type of waste, rather than its amount, determines how the waste is managed, i.e. the recyclability of a packaging. Today, more than ever, incentives need to be provided for recyclable packaging. The recycling legislation is an important stimulus to achieve this. In her informative presentation, Eva-Maria Schulze, Head of the 4th Decision Division in the Federal Cartel Agency, explained the current issues of supplier audit and central agency from the point of view of competition law. The keynote speech delivered by Prof. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, co-president of the Club of Rome, was a highlight of the forum, focusing on ideas for a resource-efficient future.
The second part of the forum began with an exciting podium discussion about recycling legislation with two Members of Parliament Dr Thomas Gebhart (CDU) and Michael Thews (SPD), as well as Holger Lösch (BDI), Detlef Raphael (German Association of Cities), and Dr. Helge Wendenburg. Subsequently, Hermann Koller from the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and Jens Nießmann from the Reclay Group explained the challenges and opportunities of recycling.
