Apparently in the process of being dropped…

Cologne, 18.12.2014

…is the current state of the GemIni initiative. Having been launched just under a year ago with a lot of media hype and the aim of abolishing the dual systems, it now appears as if the initiative is already running out of steam – even before the draft of a recycling law has seen the light of day. With a supposedly revolutionary concept for the local collection of household packaging, it appeared on the scene at the beginning of 2014 with the idea that the dual systems should be given a decent burial, and the product responsibilities newly defined. GemIni’s “innovative” plan was to finance everything via fees, but it failed to reckon with the stakeholders. The outcry was immense from everyone. Not in the least due to the fact that GemIni for months did not reveal who was actually behind the initiative with its wild, fantastic demands.

During the past few months, the initiative has radically reworked its draft several times. The result is that there’s not much left of the original concept. As a matter of fact, just the opposite – the key points presented at the end of November are virtually a complete counterproposal to the first GemIni paper. When reading it you begin to ask yourself, and rightly so, where’s the big difference to the requirements proposed by the dual systems’ version of the recycling law. Even the initiative’s speaker, Hartmut Gaßner, once the only known face and heroic trademark associated with GemIni, seems no longer to believe in the initiative’s great success, and is already preparing his withdrawal. When recently asked about GemIni at an event, he made it more than clear that he was, after all, only appointed to be the managing director. True conviction doesn’t look like that!
